“Global Health Nexus — Driving the Local Movement for Global Health,” Vicki Orrico, Global Health Nexus Program Manager and Bellevue Rotary member. Seattle Global Health Nexus, an initiative of the Washington Global Health Alliance in partnership with the Puget Sound Regional Council and the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association, is a community dedicated to healing, with over 200 representatives of research, business, government, NGOs, philanthropy, and the faith and service communities — all centered around our shared goal of making Seattle and Washington state known around the world as the nexus for the advancement of global health discovery, development, and delivery.
Vicki Orrico practiced law for over 20 years, representing businesses and local governments. In 2008, she started her own consulting firm, handling community outreach, strategic planning and implementation, fundraising, and advocacy in a broad array of areas including healthcare, education, and political and public policy. “The History and Impact of the Center for Wooden Boats,” Dick Wagner, Center for Wooden Boats, Seattle, will discuss the mission, values, and activities of this organization, which has locations in Seattle and Cama Beach State Park on Camano Island. The Center of Wooden Boats provides a gathering place where maritime history comes alive through direct experience and our small craft heritage is enjoyed, preserved, and passed along to future generations. “Kindering,” Steve Showalter, from Kindering, a not-for profit neurodevelopmental center established in 1962, which helps infants and children who are disabled, medically fragile, or at risk. In 2011, more than 3,000 infants and children with special needs and their families received services-comprehensive evaluations; physical speech, and mental health therapies; special education; consultations to community child cares; nutrition and feeding therapies; family counseling; and parent education. “Iran and the United States — Post-Axis of Evil!” Jeff Gordon. President George Bush’s 2002 speech grouping Iran, Iraq, and North Korea into an “axis of evil,” and the apparent eagerness of the United States to use its military might to overthrow one of the members of this axis, presented the Islamic Republic of Iran with a clear and direct threat to its survival. Jeff Gordon’s talk will follow the trajectory of US-Iranian relations from this speech through the invasion of Iraq and up to the present day. [Gordon]
“Why Worry about Long-Term Care?” or “Why Everything You Think You Know about Long-Term Care is Wrong,” Steve Moses, President, Center for Long-Term Care Reform, who has just completed a 2-month study of government LTC financing policy in Washington, DC, with the Cato Institute. He will share his findings and recommendations on the huge risk and cost of needing long-term health care someday. Most people do not plan for LTC as they would for other potential catastrophic events. Why? And what has changed that makes ignoring long-term care far more dangerous in the future than it has been in the past? Expect some scary, but fascinating, facts and a very important financial wake-up call. [Holert]

“Speak Easy — Two Subjects to Break the Ice and Keep the Conversation Going!” Jen Mueller, CEO, Talk Sporty to Me and Root Sports Broadcaster. A couple weeks ago, Jen encouraged people, through her website, to add "talk more to your New Years resolutions." If you missed that newsletter, you can find the information on her blog. It's a fairly easy goal to achieve around friends and family members, but achieving that level of comfort with coworkers, clients, and potential customers can be a bit more challenging, unless you have a secret weapon at your disposal.
